Quit The 9 to 5 – Ideas to generate income so I can quit my job

My first thoughts….

There are so many ideas and things that someone can do to earn money, either as a supplemental income, or to replace their full time income. My goal is to quit my job, and to find a new source of income, doing something completely different compared to what I have been doing.

As I search out different replacement income ideas, there are numerous things that I must keep in mind. Below I have listen a few things that I want to remember as I explore different ideas.

Over the years, I have owned numerous businesses, and I understand the high costs associated to run a business with a physical location. So I really like the idea of doing something with a computer, online, or with a website. A business that does not require an office, a building, a landlord, or monthly rent!

There are so many options for a business like this, finding the right one may just be the challenge.

What I am looking for…

I like businesses that can be built over time, and that can be expanded to make it as small or large that I want to make it. I like a business that once you have a customer, they come back again and again. Repeat business is nice! So maybe a product that is purchased, and as it runs out, they repurchase again and again?

Maybe a service that they need that they pay a monthly fee or membership fee?… I have seen many websites that have “members” or “users”, and they pay a reoccurring fee for the product, or to access a service.

This fits well with the idea of a business that can be built over time, and I could continually increase the business by getting more traffic, visitors, and customers etc.

A business that is a very difficult business to build is one where you are always looking for your next customer. For example, let’s say you manufacture suitcases. Once you sell someone a suitcase, they won’t be back as a customer for an extremely long time!

Once you have a customer, it is much easier to keep them happy, than it is to find another customer! So a business where a customer comes back again and again, I think is the best way to go!

What I am not looking for…

I do know what I am NOT looking, a multi-level marketing opportunity. I have tried these types of opportunities over the years, and I personally didn’t have much luck. I am guessing the main reason is, I signed up just to help out someone that wanted to recruit me, not because I wanted to. So my heart just wasn’t in it.

And now for the obvious… I am not interested in anything illegal, questionable, or possibly offensive to others. There are just too many things out there that you can do to help others, so why would you do things like that?… Something rated “G” and approved for all audiences is what I am looking for!

I am just getting started with my journey, so who knows at this point what I will find… It may be something that I find on my own, a suggestion from someone else, or maybe I team up with someone else and be a partner on some sort of business idea.

Do you have an idea that you think could be successful and generate income? Maybe you are lacking in time, knowledge, experience, or money to make it happen? I’m here and I am looking!

If you do, I would love to hear from you!

The search continues!

  1. Looking for ideas here… Any suggestions?

    • How neat! Is it really this simple? You make it look easy.

      • Back in school, I’m doing so much learning.

        • Glad I can help. Let me know if there is anything I can do.

          Mr X.

      • Things are only as hard as you think they are. Get started!

        Mr X.

  2. Sounds like you’re looking for a consultancy type of business, in which case there’s plenty to choose from. If I had any advice for you, I’d say to go with your strengths. Mine is writing and marketing, now SEO – so I wound up in affiliate marketing and love it.

But you sound like with the “returning customer” idea, you’d do better offering a service of some sort.

Just a guess. In that regard, I got started on Elance and did quite well, learned a lot in fact. Retired from that and now fully supported by my self-publishing and affiliate marketing.

I found you through SPI btw, all I can say is it’s not easy being Pat. But best of luck to you, will return to see what you’ve found.

    • I like how I put, “…go with your strengths. Mine is writing and marketing…”

DOH! Pretend I said, “Mine ARE” since the subject/object didn’t quite agree…er…

      Whoops. :)

  3. Hey James,

You is quite the writer! LOL

I appreciate the input. I’m still searching here. As far as SPI and Pat, Im only looking to be a half a Pat!

    Mr X.

  4. Half pat sounds great :)
Ideas? What’s about selling some offline product? Like bicycles, carton boxes, small furniture, etc. If it sounds a bit complicated, stick with online ones (ebooks, ringtones) but you should expect much bigger competition.
    Good luck with your project.
